AuSM Awesome Awards
Here’s your chance to acknowledge the AUT staff that provide outstanding service to students. Nominate your favourite lecturer, non-academic staff member or librarian.
You can nominate in as many categories as you like. The winners will be announced on our website and receive prizes at a presentation lunch.

Have your say
Information Technology Services (ITS) at AUT has recently completed an upgrade of facilities to ensure that students and teachers have access to good quality presentation equipment in all classrooms.  Now they want to find out what students think about the technology in learning spaces. This is your chance to have a say on how lecturers use the technology and share your ideas to improve the learning experience on campus – both inside and outside of the classroom. Many students have told us that they don’t like the discrepancies between papers, faculties and departments. Now that you have the university’s attention, let them know what you think. Start the survey.

In case you didn’t know, AuSM manages the two multi-sports courts at the back of MD building. To gain access, visit the AuSM office. We can provide all the equipment needed for tennis, basketball, netball, volleyball, soccer and touch rugby.

There are also a wide range of social sports offered including table tennis, touch rugby, soccer and ultimate frisbee.  For more information contact Kate Lowden (klowden@aut.ac.nz), the AuSM social sports co-ordinator, and let her know what and when your group would like to play.

Travel Bug
Getting between campuses is much easier with the AUT shuttle bus. It leaves Manukau Campus for the City and North Shore Campuses three times daily at 7.00am, 12.05pm and 5.55pm Monday to Friday. Multi-ride tickets can be purchased from the cafeteria in MD building. If you can drive to campus, parking is available in car park six behind MC building. Parking is free this year so make the most of it.

Current Developments
Level two of MC building will be renovated and include more classrooms, a large computer lab and a commons area. Plans are also underway for changing rooms to be built next to MD building so that the swimming pool can be used by students in 2011.

That’s all from the AuSM team at Manukau – see you at the Manukau Free Feeds, every Monday at midday outside the AuSM office!

Discounted transport for part-time students
We have had a lot of feedback from part-time students who do not qualify for a tertiary monthly pass. We have been lobbying ARTA for a few years now to get the discount extended to cover part time students – however as any uptake on this would involve further ratepayer funded subsidy we have not yet met with success. If you would like some more information click here. We will keep fighting for you!

Movie Madness
The new Event Cinema Student VIP cards are in stock. Buy a card for $15 and get $10 films all year plus a free film on sign-up.
We are hard at work sorting out another AuSM movie screening for you. If you haven’t already been to one this year – don’t miss out. AuSM provides the film, popcorn, drink, spot prizes and lots of other treats for everyone who comes. Keep your eyes glued to our website for details.

Extreme make-over
The Wellesley office has been completely overhauled during the semester break. Everyone was sick of the massive queues, lack of light and limited space so we have ripped out some walls, added sliding doors and put some computers in for you to use. Most importantly, we have split up the reception and shop so you don’t have to wait in the bus ticket queue if you’re not buying one. Come and check it out!

Need a Job?
Student Job Search (a service funded by AuSM) is now operating out of our Wellesley office. Drop in and see the friendly staff if your looking for flexible work that will fit in with your schedule.

IT improvements
In semester two, AuSM staff gathered feedback from students that we could pass on to IT services at their strategic visioning conference. Recommendations included introducing social networking forums to discuss papers, improved staff training to support new technology, personalised text/email alerts specific to papers, singular campus currency linked to ID cards, e-textbooks that could be downloaded by the chapter and better access to laptops.
We presented the findings to staff, decision makers and service providers at the conference. They were so enamoured by the feedback that we were asked to present again to the Academic Board. It was fantastic to see AUT taking student feedback on board and striving to make changes.
Since the presentation, AUT have begun revising UniCentral to find ways of improving it. They are also working with key service-providers to secure discounts on software and pushing for new technology that will enable guest lecturers from overseas to stream live into lecture theatres.  While there are currently 50 laptops for hire available in the Wellesley library and 40 at Manukau, staff are currently looking into a leasing option for you. Most importantly, the university has acknowledged how important it is for staff to adopt new technology and ensure teaching methods are consistent across faculties.
We will keep you updated on all the developments and make sure you know exactly what equipment is available to you while you’re studying here.
