Harbour Basketball – Winter League 2010 Finals

AUT all but dominated the North Harbour Competition in all their respective competitions.
With the AUT women’s B grade already in the bag, the 2 men’s team both made their respective finals held on Wednesday 28th July.
The AUT Mens A grade team, fresh from their unlucky 4th place at the Northern Regional championships, played their final first. The nerves were clear from the start as the Basketball Times team moved out to a fast 15 point lead – Once player coach Jordan Kershaw started to settle the team down.  Lead by AUT Sport & Recreation student Blake Drummond & Engineering student Joshua Del Rosairo, AUT began to claw back the deficit with both players scoring a joint team high of 12 points. With AUT raising the intensity on defence it started to rattle the Basketball Times team who had 2 former Tall Blacks in their ranks, However this experience proved too much for the AUT boys with the opposition calling several time-outs to counter the AUT youth and fitness. Eventual winners were Basketball Times by 11 points.
The AUT A grade had a great season and look forward to playing in the Premier grade over the Summer.

AUT Premier team were the summer league defending champions, but were up against the North Harbour 2nd Division team in the final of the Winter League. Manakau based Zach Makavilitogia lead the way with strong defence and driving to the hoop from early on – North Harbour captain/coach Dan Ryan who top scored with 27 points managed to keep his team in touch. The 1st three quarters were forgotten with scored tied at the beginning of the last quarter. Settling the team down in what was an intense final quarter was Alumni and North Harbour Heat player Houston O’reilly with some great assists and 3 pointers. With just 18 seconds to go North Harbour hit the lead with AUT having ball in hand. With a strong drive to the hoop, Zach was fouled while making the basket putting AUT ahead by 3 with under 3 seconds left. – a long throw in from Harbour reached Dan Ryan who put up a 3 point shot with less than second to go which bounced off the back of the rim and off to the side.
Another great win for AUT. This was revenge of sort as the North Harbour team had beaten them in the final of the 2009 2nd Division championships.

ROUND 6:

Premier Grade: With Captain Mitch injured and likely out for the season, AUT boys need to step up as an individual and as a team if they are to gain 1st place. However, with only 5 players available to play on Wednesday night against Horze Lyf, a smooth win seems out of reach. To make matters worse, AUT team played their worse game of the season as fatigue sets in, and the lack of communication and synergy cost them a win. The final results were 86-76 to Horze Lyf.

A Grade: AUT A Grade played the Westlake Boys on Wed night. At the start of the game, Westlake Boys were able to score points off fast-breaks as they played their fast-pace game. But with Mike Roberts and Nick leading the team altogether, the team started playing pressured defence, leading to many turn-over points for the AUT boys. With Rhys and Blake creating presence and pressure inside the key on offense, The Westlake Boys could not find ways to stop the outside shooters. It was a cruise win for the boys as they take home a win of 79-50. An outstanding performance from Josh, Danny and Blake for their shooting.

WEEK 3 RESULTS:

A Grade: With the Uni Games 2010 approaching, AUT A Grade had only 6 players available on Wednesday night against the Dolphinz Blue. The game began as a men-to-men defense and the AUT boys were able to gain an early lead that lasted throughout the game. After 32 minutes of work, the AUT A Grade Men ends the game with 56-51 over the Dolphinz Blue, placing them at 5th out of the 15 teams participating.
And congratulations to Matt, who played extraordinary that night.

Prem: Lost by Default

WEEK 1 RESULTS:

A Grade: On March 31, the AUT A Grade Mens Basketball played against the Wiggles. The team played well considering it was the first game of the season. AUT took the wiggles in a 60-43 win.

Prem: Coming back from a long summer break, the AUT Premier Grade Mens Basketball faced a strong opponent – The Unknowns, who were the champion of the A Grade in 2009. The boys put in the effort and came out as a strong defensive team. However, tough defense sometimes lead to foul calls, and The
Unknowns were able to catch on from a 10+ points lead by AUT through free-throws. The final score was 64-57 to AUT.
